Dude of the week

Greg from Classic Ax: I love going to this little guitar repair shop on music row. I mean, I take that back, I hate having to, because it means I’m needing work on my guitar, but I’m super fascinated by Greg. First of all, the entrance is from the alley, and the door is a steel door with the little slideable plate so that, when you ring, he can peep open the tiny window to make sure you’re not wearing a facemask and carrying a bat. One inside, you see the guitars in the shop with labels like “Montgomery Gentry”. I love this. It levels the playing field, makes me feel like a ‘real live boy’ somehow in this elitist music biz.
Greg is what I would describe as a ‘mad scientist’. He’s actually not mad – not even socially awkward, he’s just super smart. And obviously carrying ridiculous amounts of knowledge about what he does. When he fixes whatever problem, he explains it all to you – exactly what he’s doing, as if next time I’ll be able to do it myself. But the most endearing part is his generosity. This week, he fixed my minor problem and charged me $2 (for a battery he replaced). I love that. People like that, you walk away thinking that they really love what they do. I also walk away thinking “what in tarnation is such an honest guy doing on music row?”
